Film Nights
Films on the theme of
Common Ground
Black Power Mixtape is compiled of Swedish state television archival snippets from when Sweden was at its most social-democratic (non-aligned nation etc), so the Black Power movement gets refracted through a fairly sympathetic lens. There is and element of temporality to the historical footage more or less recontextualized by the contemporary commentators. The narration is their responses to the footage, rather than an authoritative explanatory voice.
The 5 Obstructions is by Lars von Trier and Jørgen Leth. The basic premise is that von Trier loved Leth's film so much he had him recreate the same movie five different times, under different conditions each time. This film will conclude the opening night of the conference.

Film nights are a way for us to explore the (im)possibilities of Common Ground in a context beyond/before our own.
All films will be screened in the Council Room of the Laurie Grove Baths building located on the campus of Goldsmiths College.
This is a non-profit event series and is for educational purposes only.
